Stany, Stany, fajowa jazda...

...śpiewa T.Love i Muniek Staszczyk. Ciąg dalszy podróży z "Mazowszem".
Jeździmy naprawdę dużo. Od relacji z St.Paul sprzed tygodnia
przejechaliśmy 2996 km. Na szczęście są autostrady, a i zima nie zaskakuje
drogowców.
Podczas koncertu w Worcester (8. grudnia) znów "America the beautiful"
wysłuchana została na stojąco, a niespodziewane emocje wzbudziła muzyka
Fryderyka Chopina, zwłaszcza "Ronda a la krakowiak" (impresja baletowa w
choreografii Witolda Zapały, która miała premierę 17.października 2009
roku podczas otwarcia Matecznika Mazowsze).

"Iron Maiden" potem "Mazowsze"
Przyszedł czas na kilka słów o logistyce tourneé. Nasz bagaż na odprawie
cargo wynosił 4, 5 tony (3,5 tony mniej, niż na wyjazdach po Polsce).
Skrzynie z kostiumami lecą z kilkudniowym wyprzedzeniem i, niestety,
wracają z kilkudniowym opóźnieniem. Z koncertu na koncert przewozi je
czerwony Kenworth, prowadzony przez Mikea Fitzpatricka, który obsługiwał
poprzednio trasę zespołu..."Iron Maiden"!
Prawo amerykańskie gwarantuje pracownikom teatrów, w których gramy,
zatrudnienie nawet przy obsłudze koncertów zagranicznych artystów. Ekipa
techniczna (oświetleniowiec czy akustyk) zmienia się więc codziennie.
Przemieszczamy się dwoma białymi autokarami z logo przewoźnika - firmy
"Bernard". W pierwszym kierowcą jest Brad Nowak (nie zna pochodzenia
swojego nazwiska, więc prawdopodobnie Jego przodkowie przybyli do Ameryki
razem z Krzysztofem Kolumbowiczem, patrz relacja z koncertu w Milwaukee),
w drugim Bob Schwaderer (jego rodzina pochodzi z południowych Niemiec).
Opiekę nad grupą sprawuję Clare Cannizzaro (może Włoszka?).
Nasza ekipa techniczna (kierownik techniczny i garderobiani, bez których
nie odbyłby się żaden koncert, czyli: Robert Katolik, Katarzyna Klepacz,
Izabella Popis, Renata Pietrzak i Rafał Orłowski), podróżuje camperem.
Opiekę nad nimi sprawuje David Pinner.
W Cleveland (6. grudnia) gościliśmy na koncercie wielu uczestników
warsztatów tanecznych z Youngstown, ale nie tylko. Było bardzo dużo
Polonii (wieczór zakończył się polską gościnnością), ale był też nasz fan
z Facebooka &#8211; Tim Stoll, który napisał trzy dni później na czacie,
że spotkał wreszcie przyjaciół poznanych przez Internet, że chwile z
zespołem (Tim uczestniczył też w warsztatach) rozpaliły w nim płomień do
polskiej kultury ludowej. Dodał też, że gdyby należał do któregoś z
polonijnych klubów, mógłby uczestniczyć w spotkaniu z Prezydentem RP
Bronisławem Komorowskim, który gościł w Cleveland trzy dni po naszym
koncercie) i że byłby to najlepszy weekend w Jego życiu.

Nietypowy dzień 

Takiego dnia podczas poprzednich tras po Stanach Zjednoczonych nie było.
Jedni koncertowali (chór z orkiestrą), inni uczestniczyli w warsztatach
tanecznych dla zespołów polonijnych, a reszta  odpoczywała (5.grudnia).
Miasto młodzieży rzeczywiście pełne było młodzieży. 



Na pierwsze w historii "Mazowsza" zagraniczne warsztaty tańca ludowego zjechali się chętni nawet z oddalonego o 300 km Detroit i 500 km Nowego Jorku. W programie warsztatów, poza prelekcją Stanisława Kmiecia o historii zespołu, znalazły się zajęcia praktyczne - z oberkiem i tańcami góralskimi za pan brat. Poza grupą dziecięcą i młodzieżową, znaleźli się także starsi amatorzy tańca. Zajęcia prowadziła Wioletta Milczuk, Anna Paś, Marcin Mierzejewski i Piotr Zalipski. Frekwencja dopisała; było prawie     osób.



Kursanci zapowiedzieli się na kontynuację nauki ... w Karolinie (w lipcu
odbywa się wielki festiwal polonijnych zespołów folklorystycznych w
Rzeszowie).

Not your typical day


A day such as this was never experienced by Mazowsze during the previous tours of the United States. A single vocal concert (choir and orchestra), while some others participated in dance workshops for American Polonia ensembles;  the rest of the company had a day of rest. The city pf youth was in actuality - full of youth. 



Eager enthusiasts thronged to the first folk dance workshops abroad in "Mazowsze's" history thronged with, even from a remote Detroit about 300 km and 500 km of New York. The workshop, in addition to a lecture about the history of our company by Stanisław Kmieć, were the practical classes - with oberek and highland dancing. In addition to group classes for children and youth, there were also older amateur dancers. Classes were lead by Wioletta Milczuk, Anna Paś, Marcin Mierzejewski i Piotr Zalipski. The turnout was great, with almost     people.

The participants promised to continue their learning... in Karolin (July is a great festival of Polish-Polonia folk groups in Rzeszów, Poland).

Sto lat, sto lat

Cała sala śpiewała nam "Sto lat"! Ponad 1700 osób! Zagraliśmy w Music Hall
w Detroit dwa koncerty (4.grudnia) dla blisko trzech tysięcy widzów
(stolica stanu Michigan jest obecnie ćwierćmilionowym skupiskiem Polonii).
Po pierwszym spektaklu śpiewała cała sala, ale po drugim na scenę wyszedł
Ks. Mirosław Frankowski, proboszcz Parafii św. Floriana w Hamtramck oraz
dzieci w strojach góralskich. Ksiądz podziękował za duchową ucztę i
pobłogosławił "Mazowsze", życząc dalszych sukcesów, a dzieci wręczyły nam
kwiaty.

Wieczorem, Polanie Song & Dance Ensemble zaprosili nas na spotkanie w Jazz
Café z organizacjami polonijnymi działającymi w Detroit. Było bardzo miło.
Polanie dzielili się wrażeniami z koncertu, a ekipa Telewizji Detroit (z
redaktorem Rafałem Nowakowskim na czele) bawiła się w "paparazzich". Nie
zabrakło też przedstawicieli mediów drukowanych; "Polish Times"
reprezentował redaktor naczelny Sebastian Szczepański.
Byli też zasłużeni na obczyźnie, jak Kazimierz J.Olejarczyk, który
przekazał nam przetłumaczoną przez siebie na język angielski "Dumkę o
ptaszku" (czyli "Ej, przeleciał ptaszek"). Pan Kazimierz zauroczony
"Mazowszem", napisał angielską wersję 3.listopada 1961 roku, lecz dopiero
teraz miał możliwość przekazania nam tekstu osobiście. Dziękujemy i
życzymy dużo zdrowia!

P.S.
Rankiem miasto opanowali kibice futbolu amerykańskiego (działa tu kilka
znanych klubów sportowych, między innymi Detroit Tigers; baseball
oraz Detroit Lions - futbol), przez co mieliśmy utrudniony wyjazd do
Youngstown. Hotel Hilton, w którym mieszkaliśmy, dzieliliśmy z
rozentuzjazmowanymi kibicami Chicago Bears. Pierwsze starcie nowego sezonu
odbywało się na pobliskim stadionie Ford Field; siedzibie Detroit
Lions. Kibice, którzy nie zmieścili się na trybunach, opanowali okoliczne
parkingi, oglądając mecz na telebimach, bawiąc się i grillując przy -3; (w USA obowiązuje skala Fahrenheita, czyli 26,6), wszyscy w
uniformach ulubionych drużyn.
Ach, ta sława...Może kiedyś i my doczekamy się takiego fanklubu?...
Jesteśmy na to przygotowani; mamy nowy parking przy Mateczniku
Mazowsze (ze względów bezpieczeństwa oraz ochrony zabytków zalecamy
grillowanie we własnym ogródku).

Wreszcie sensacja

Amerykański profesor odkrył, że Amerykę odkrył Polak; Krzysztof
Kolumbowicz.

Wierzyć w to, czy nie wierzyć? Oto jest pytanie. Ta sensacyjna wiadomość,
podważająca włoskie korzenie najsłynniejszego podróżnika, zatrzęsła
największymi tytułami prasowymi na świecie. Wszyscy powołują się na wyniki
badań portugalskiego naukowca, Manuela Rosę, z Duke University. Ten
niestrudzony poszukiwacz prawdy ustalił po 20 latach, że Krzysztof Kolumb
nie jest wcale synem włoskiego tkacza, ale szlachetnie urodzonym potomkiem
wygnanego na Maderę Władysława III Warneńczyka - króla Polski.
Czyż ta niewiarygodna historia nie powinna zmienić biegu historii
najnowszej?  Może jesteśmy 12. raz na Naszej Ziemi?

Smiechem, żartem...daliśmy koncert w Milwaukee (jeszcze amerykańskim).
Kolędy znów wycisnęły łzy z oczu...Pierwszy dzień Adwentu...

Półmetek

Za nami połowa trasy. Przyszedł moment małego podsumowania w statystykach - ponad 20 tys. widzów, 3 679 przejechanych kilometrów, jedenaście odwiedzonych miast, 13 koncertów.

Koncert w Sali College of St.Catherine w Saint Paul (w stanie Minnesota)
był trzynastym spektaklem tego tournée (29.listopada). Widownia podobna do
Chicago; Polonia! W wydrukowanych programach koncertu reklamowali
się polscy przedsiębiorcy (np. The Kramarczuk Sausage Company i Kowalski's
Markets), a Dolina Polish Folk Dancers oraz Polish American Cultural of
Minnesota zaprosili nas na kolację w niemieckim Gasthofie. Mimo
germańskich skojarzeń, było iście po polsku; schabowy, domowa
wiśniówka i "Szła dzieweczka" grana na  akordeonie.

Halfway mark

Behind us is half of the route of our tour. A short summary of the statistics - over 20 thousand. viewers, 3 679 kilometers, eleven cities, 13 concerts.

The Concert Hall College of St.Catherine in Saint Paul (Minnesota) was the thirteenth spectacle of the tour (November 29). The audience similar to Chicago; Polonia! In the printed concert programs advertised to Polish entrepreneurs (eg The Kramarczuk Sausage Company and Kowalski's Markets),  the Dolina Polish Folk Dancers and the Polish American Cultural of Minnesota invited us to dinner at the German Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit. Despite the Germanic associations, it was truly in Polish; chop, homemade  wiśniówka (kirsch) and the folk song "Szła dziewecza" played on the accordion.

CHICAGO - Saturday/Sunday, November 27 & 28

500 $ za bilet!


Chicago; największe (poza Polską) skupisko Polaków i ludności
pochodzenia polskiego (ok. 1,1 mln osób polskiego pochodzenia, w tym około
250 tys. mówiących na co dzień po polsku). Salę Symphony Center, w której
graliśmy trzy lata temu, wypełniliśmy dwa razy! Najdroższe bilety
kosztowały 500 $! To jest Chicago!

 Do końca lat 80. XX wieku spora część Polaków w Chicago zamieszkiwała
dzielnicę Polish Village, potocznie nazywaną Jackowem. Obecnie Polacy
mieszkają w wielu różnych dzielnicach i na przedmieściach. Wielu naszych
rodaków, głównie pochodzących z południowych stron Polski (szczególnie
Podhalan) można spotkać w południowej części Chicago. Ale to nie
najważniejsze; Polonia z entuzjazmem przyjęła "Mazowsze". Podobało
się wszystko: i stroje, i kolędy, i Chopin, a nade wszystko "Furman"
połączony z tekstami wiązanki melodii amerykańskich, zwłaszcza fragmentem
"She'll be drivin' six white horses" (łączonych z "Furmanem") oraz  "This
land is Your land" (interpretowanych w odniesienu do emigracji).
Ledwo mieściliśmy się na scenie! To naprawdę nietypowe widowisko, jak na
salę filharmonii.

Odwiedzili nas "starzy Mazowszacy", my odwiedzaliśmy rodziny i znajomych,
pisaliśmy kartki...

Chicago - the largest (except in Poland) cluster of ethnic Poles and Polish (about 1.1 million people of Polish origin, including about 250 thousand, who speak in Polish each day). The Symphony Center Hall, where we played three years ago, was filled two times! The most expensive tickets cost $ 500! This is Chicago!

By the end of the 1980s Poles in Chicago established the "Polish Village" resident district, commonly known as "Jacks."   Poles currently live in many different neighborhoods and suburbs of Chicago. Many of our compatriots, mainly from the southern Polish regions (especially the mountain Highlanders) are found in the southern part of Chicago. But this is not of importance - Polonia was enthusiastic about the "Mazowsze". They liked everything, and costumes, and Christmas carols, and Chopin, and, above all the "Furman" related references in the U.S.folk medly, especially the portion of the "She'll be drivin 'six white horses" (coupled with "Furman") and "This Land is Your Land "(interpreted with regards and sentiment the references to emigrate). We barley fit on the stage! It's not the typical stage setting, as it is a philharmonic hall designed for orchestra instrumental concerts.

"Old Mazowsze" came backstage to see us; we visited family and friends, and wrote postcards...

Magia sklepowych wyprzedaży po Święcie Dziękczynienia udzieliła się także
i nam. Na szczęście obowiązuje limit bagażowy &#8211; jedna walizka 23kg.
Choć nie widzieliśmy przepychanek przy kasach, ani rozłożonych śpiworów
przed sklepami, odczuliśmy spadek zainteresowania koncertem.

Ale, jak mówi stare przysłowie - nie ma tego złego, co by na dobre nie
wyszło. Sala Muzeum Żołnierzy i Marynarzy w Pittsburghu zgromadziła tylko
tych słuchaczy, którzy zrezygnowali z zakupów i dzięki temu atmosfera
spaktaklu rosła z piosenki na piosenkę, z tańca na taniec. "Furman"
bisowany był trzy razy, wiązanka popularnych melodii amerykańskich
bisowana i wysłuchana na stojąco (wydźwięk amerykańskich melodii w
połączeniu z muzeum narodowych pamiątek nabrał znaczenia symbolicznego,
zwłaszcza fragment "America the beautiful", będący najbardziej znaną
patriotyczną pieśnią po hymnie państwowym)

The instructors will include: Witold Zapała - Chief Choreographer and Artistic Visionary, Artistic Director Ryszard Grąbkowski, Wioletta Milczuk - Company Ballet Mistress, Mariusz Kolinko - Choral Director, Krzysztof Kurlej - Head of the Production Office, and American Staś Kmieć – U.S. Mazowsze spokesman, NYC theater/dance choreographer and PBS Polish culture expert; along with dancers from the company.

"Meet Mazowsze" - the colorful story behind the legendary company
"A Peek Behind the Curtain" - practical tips, recreating costumes; authentic vs. stylization

Wigilia with Mazowsze - Sunday, December 5th

Sunday evening, the 18-piece orchestra and 20-piece choral will be performing as the entertainment at the Polish Arts Club of Youngstown Annual Wigilia Dinner at The Youngstown Club. Listen to a sample here. This event is open to the public.

Mazurka and Polish Character Dance

Saturday, December 4th - In conjunction with the tour of Mazowsze, NYC choreographer Staś Kmieć will be in town and has agreed to share his skills in open workshops with for regional dancers.

11:30 AM - as a trained instructor of The New York City Ballet Workout, Staś will teach a ballet fitness master class (perfect for the serious folk dancer) that focuses on traditional ballet moves with Pilates and yoga stretches, and incorporates high-impact choreographed dance combinations, inspired by the Ballet repertoire in a fun and sweaty format. The session is open to the general public is only $10 for the 1.5 hour session

2:00 PM - Staś Kmieć with teach a master class in the national dance Mazurka and Polish Character Dance at Ballet Western Reserve. Learn the dashing Mazurka, the elegant Polonaise and vivacious Krakowiak, along with exciting folkloric jumps and turns.

Trained in Poland and an American.authority on Polish dance (character, period, national and folk) and culture, Kmieć has danced with the Rudolf Nureyev, the Boston Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet; toured internationally and performed on Broadway.. He has worked with Polish American dance groups including Chicago's Lira Ensemble, The Alliance College Kujawiaki and the 250 members of The Orange County Onion Harvest Festival and the Lubliniacy Polish Song and Dance Ensemble, which he is the founder of. He has choreographed musicals, films, plays, ballets and operas.

Monday, December 6th - the entire Mazowsze troupe will be performing at the State Theatre in Cleveland. PolishYoungstown has reserved a bloc of special tickets that include a cast party with the Mazowsze after the show.

Hamilton, 21.listopada.

Kolejny dzień w Kanadzie (21.listopada) przyniósł kolejne niezapomniane
przeżycia; odwiedzili nas dawni artyści "Mazowsza", którzy z
wielkim wzruszeniem i domieszką zrozumiałego krytycyzmu oglądali spektakl.

W Hamilton było ponad 1250 widzów.
Podczas tego tournée po raz pierwszy od śmierci Stanisława Jopka
kanadyjscy i amerykańscy widzowie mogą usłyszeć  "Furmana". Tę
ponadczasową i dowcipną piosenkę interpretuje teraz Filip Micek;solista i inspektor chóru. Nawet u "starych Mazowszaków" nowy "Furman" zyskał uznanie.

Kanada żegnała nas łzami deszczu, lecz mimo to, jak podczas każdej wizyty
w Kanadzie, odwiedziliśmy wodospad Niagarę.

Two Shows 4:00 and 8:00 pm at the Sony Centre

This morning, we crossed the border into Canada from Buffalo. Having much of the paperwork done prior to our arrival, there were no delays at customs. Everyone filed from each bus into the immigration office to have their passport checked by the officers and we were on our way within 30 minutes of arriving at Peace Bridge. We arrived in Toronto with ample time for the company to settle into their dressing area and explore downtown Toronto!

The members of Mazowsze are slowly teaching me the important things to say in Polish (though that may not be of general interest!) and this is the promptest group I've ever worked with in regards to keeping bus calls on time every day!

They also find it highly amusing that I have decorated my bus seat and window for Christmas.....a very tiny, home away from home. They tease that next I'll be bringing a Christmas Tree onto the bus. And I may just do that....

The Sony Centre For The Performing Arts is Canada’s largest soft-seat theatre. The Sony Centre opened as the O’Keefe Centre on October 1, 1960, and has played host to a tremendous variety of international attractions and stars.

The theatre, designated a historical site by the City of Toronto, is undergoing extensive renovations that will restore the elegance and grandeur of the original O’Keefe Centre. Iconic features such as the theatre’s marquee canopy and York Wilson’s lobby mural “The Seven Lively Arts” will be preserved. Restoration of the wood, brass and marble that were hallmarks of the original facility are being undertaken.

Po 25. latach wróciliśmy na scenę Sony Center w Toronto (20.listopada).
Zagraliśmy dwa koncerty dla 4. tysięcy widzów (na sony-sprzęcie). Było

bardo dużo torontyjczyków mówiących po polsku (według badań Kanadyjskiego
Urzędu Statystycznego jest ich w Toronto 79 875).
Podróże kształcą &#8211; nazwa Toronto pochodzi z języka Indian plemienia
Huron i oznacza "miejsce spotkań". Spotkaliśmy się więc z widzami nie
tylko na koncercie, ale i po nim. Zespół Pieśni i Tańca "Biały Orzeł"
zorganizował nam spotkanie w sali parafialnej Kościoła Św. Kazimierza.
Ugościli nas ze staropolską gościnnością (był nawet bigos i pierogi) nie
tylko ilością jedzenia, ale przede wszystkim serdecznością, sympatią i
zabawą. Zespół zaprezentował krótki program artystyczny oraz porwał nas do

wspólnego tańca.

Biały Orzeł / White Eagle Polish Song and Dance Ensemble of Toronto hosted Mazowsze following their two performances. Welcoming them with about 7 Góralskie mountain musicians, they started their show with the traditional welcome of bread and salt; they danced Łowicz, sang “My Młodziez Polska z Zagranicy,” danced Lachy Sądeckie, Slovak dances from Detva, Spiskie and their popular Roma Gypsy dances. There was a huge potluck and open bar. The company was thrilled they got to have really good home cooked food.

It was a great evening ... and especially for the Biały Orzeł dancers because of the warm reception they received Mazowsze with lots of applause. Knowing that the company truly appreciated the work they do to promote Polish folk culture meant so much to them - especially because this audience knows and respects how much work goes into what they present.

After the drive from Schenectady, before arriving at the hotel in Buffalo, we spent 1.5 hours at the Galleria Walden Mall, shopping and having lunch while the drivers went to fuel for the buses. A lovely show last night at the Shea's Theatre, with 1100 audience members in attendance.

Buffalo ma znaczną liczbę ludności polskiego pochodzenia, a na początku XX
wieku drukowano tu wiele czasopism polskojęzycznych oraz powołano Kongres
Polonii Amerykańskiej. Stąd już tylko krok do Kanady (z pokoi hotelu
Hyatt, w którym się zatrzymaliśmy, widać most na rzece Niagara łączący dwa
kraje oraz wybrzeże jeziora Erie).
W programie koncertu w Shea's Performing Arts Centre (19.listopada)
znalazły się ponownie kolędy. Po finałowych ukłonach weszły na scenę dwie
małe dziewczynki w polskich strojach ludowych i wręczyły nam kwiaty.

Between the U.S. and Canadian shores

Buffalo has a large population of Polish origin, and at the beginning of the twentieth century there are many magazines printed Polish language and the creation of the Polish American Congress. It's only one step in Canada (with the rooms at the Hyatt, where we stopped, you can see the bridge over the Niagara River connecting the two countries and the coast of Lake Erie). The Polish Christmas carols returned to the program at the concert at Shea's Performing Arts Centre (19.November). After the final bows two little girls in Polish folk costumes came onto the stage and presented us with flowers.

Schau-naugh-ta-da oznacza w języku Indian "nad sosnową równiną." To XVII
wieczne miasto założone zostało przez plemię Irokezów, ale to nie jedyna
ciekawostka –  w 1892 roku Thomas Edison założył tu General Electric
Company.

Choć na widowni nie było indiańskich wojowników (jedynie członek ekipy
technicznej Proctor's Theater miał czapkę z irokezem),  a i nasze twarze
nie były blade (bajecznie kolorowe), mieliśmy komplet – ponad tysiąc
widzów.

The name Schenectady is believed to be derived from the Indian Iroquois word "Schau-naugh-ta-da," which is translated to "over the pine plains." In the seventeenth century the city was founded by a tribe of the Iroquois, but that i snot the only interesting fact - in 1892 Thomas Edison founded the General Electric Company.

The Fine Arts Center is located in the middle of the student campus at the University of Massachusetts. However, at the time the concert took place, native inhabitants of the area's terrain overtook the campus ... silver squirrels and wild geese. The students went to see "Mazowsze".

The audience at Amherst was extremely demanding, because outside of the music department students (all students received discounted tickets), there were over two hundred Poles in attendance.

The Mikolaj Kopernik monument, located in a small park on Genesee Street across from Fountain Elms in Utica, NY, honors the "Father of Modern Astronomy," known to Americans as Nicolaus Copernicus. He reformed astronomy and initated modern science by putting an end to the belief that the earth was the heavenly center of the universe.

Copernicus pointed out that the sun was the center of of the planetary system and instead of being stationary the earth revolved around the sun in the course of a year while rotating once every 24 hours about the axis. This thinking might have appeared somewhat strange to some in his day, even a bit radical. Right before he died, in 1543, his book was published, titled -- "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (On the Revolutions of the Celestrial Speres), which is often regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy. He was born in Torun, Poland in 1473. He was also a mathematician, physician, artist, clasical scholar, dipomat and an economist.

The Stanley Theatre

The Stanley Theatre opened September 10, 1928, as a silent moviehouse and has been the premier showplace for Central New York ever since. Over the years, it has gone through several changes of ownership, but has always been affiliated with Warner Brothers Pictures. Originally owned by the Stanley-Mark Strand Corporation chain, the Stanley Theatre (and entire movie theatre chain) was purchased three days before its 1928 opening by Warner Brothers, eager to showcase its product on as many screens as possible.

Thomas Lamb, a prolific theatre architect, designed this 2,963 seat movie palace for the Mastbaum chain of theatres. The theatre was named for Stanley, one of the Mastbaum brothers.
The Stanley was built in less than 13 months on the expanding southern edge of downtown, some four blocks away from Utica’s theatre district. Unfortunately, all the theatres located there were razed during the Urban Renewal era of the 1960s and 70s.
The Stanley remained open through all of this, though it suffered many years of benign neglect. In 1974, when

the threat of destruction became very real, the Central New York Community Arts Council spearheaded a campaign to acquire the property, which it did for $135,000.

Over $5.5 million has been spent to date on its brilliant restoration. Since its purchase, it has upgraded all mechanical, electrical, and safety systems and is continuing to provide technical improvements to accommodate the many touring shows and artists that appear on its stage.
The design motif of the Stanley Theatre is dubbed “Mexican Baroque” because of its unique blend of styles. The terra cotta and tiled mosaic exterior shows the

Mexican influence, while Hapsburg lions, Indian faces, and a multitude of angels and cherubs grace the lavish gold leaf Baroque theatre interior.

Moorish influence is also evident in the star-splashed ceiling and twisted columns flanking the stage. There is even an art-deco look to some of the drapery treatments in the organ boxes. Legend has it that the grand entry staircase was designed to resemble the main staircase on the Titanic ocean liner.
Meyda Tiffany, a leading manufacturer of decorative lighting, has just installed the The World's Largest LED Chandelier.

Today the theater is host to the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Great Artists Series; Broadway Theatre League; Utica Symphony; and the Mohawk Valley Ballet.
Notable early performers included legendary singers Marian Anderson, Ezio Pinza, and Jeanette

MacDonald. Later illustrious entertainers included Diana Ross, Barry Manilow, and Harry Connick Jr. The Stanley was also host to multiple appearances by Wynton Marsalis, George Carlin, and Itzhak Perlman. More recent performances include Aretha Franklin, BB King, The Indigo Girls, Judy Collins and legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach. Additionally, the Broadway Theatre League brought in National Touring productions of Cats, Annie, Evita, Sweeney Todd, and Barnum, just to name a few.

Polish Folk dance sensation "Mazowsze" returns to Philadelphia – tak zapowiadano nasz koncert. Sensacją byliśmy niewątpliwie. Pierwszy koncert tego tournée za nami. Sala Kimmel Center wypełniona była po brzegi - 2500 widzów!

Mimo nietypowych warunków, jak na widowisko taneczne (filharmoniczny układ widowni), koncert przyjęto z entuzjazmem i ...wzruszeniem. Najpiękniejsze polskie kolędy wprowadziły widzów w nastrój zbliżających się Świąt Bożego Narodzenia, a wir kolorów dodał tym emocjom ekspresji. Trudno ocenić, które choreografie wzbudzały największy podziw, które kostiumy podobały się najbardziej. Jedno jest pewne – polski folklor poraz kolejny pokonał barierę językową. Przed nami koncert w Utica.

It is difficult to assess which aroused the greatest admiration the choreography or the costumes? On their day off in Philadelphia, in order to adapt to the time difference and the effects of jet-lag before embarking on their 20-city North American tour., many member of Mazowsze were eager to visit Philadelphia's Liberty Bell - not for its historical significance, but because the Liberty Bell and its inscription figured prominently in the in the plot of the 2004 adventure thriller National Treasure: Book of Secrets starring Nicolas Cage. In Poland the film was called Skarb Narodów: Księga Tajemnic.

According to legend, the Liberty Bell was first struck on July 8, 1776, as a call to the citizens of Philadelphia to the reading of the Declaration of Independence. It is also said that the bell was rung in 1774 to announce the meeting of the First Continental Congress, as well as in 1775 after the battles of Lexington and Concord. Although it is disputed as to whether or not the bell was rung at each and every one of these events, it is nevertheless quite clear that what started out as a simple court house tower bell has now become an international symbol of freedom.

The Liberty Bell inscription is a quote from the Bible: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" —Lev. XXV, v.x.

After a company meeting to surrender passports for Social Security purposes, the company made a trip to a nearby Walmart to seek supplies, like water, juice, bananas, grapes and other items to have in their hotels and for the bus travel from city-to-city.

According to the current travel restrictions, the company was only allowed to bring only one suitcase. This will make bus travel easier, but places a burden on the members regarding daily supplies. Mazowsze also needed to purchase basic items for their backstage preparation such as hairspray (they use TRESemmé aerosol) and Kleenex tissues.
The Walmart was not a Super-Walmart and was limited regarding food purchases. In search of fresh bread and produce, the company venture across the parking lot to Super Fresh supermarket. They noticed that the prices for items was higher, but they also found certain products that they needed. Despite the expense, the variety was more extensive. Some ventured to the electronics department to begin checking out prices and new products. Again they await a more extensive selection later in the tour at either a Super-Walmart or Best Buy.

Upon return many ventured for a night out and continued walking tour of Philadelphia. Conductor Bogusław Kręgielewski headed to hear a concert by the Philadelphia Philharmonic - which he considered a "once in a lifetime opportunity."

Chopin Tribute to Premiere

The best way to experience the magic and magnificence of Mazowsze – The National Song and Dance Ensemble of Poland is to see the company perform live. The world-renowned company returns to North America in a special 60^th Anniversary celebratory tour of live performances November 14 – December 12. Presented by 2Luck Concepts, the tour will feature 90 dancers, singers and the full 23-member orchestra.

New Program

The concert program will differ greatly from the PBS television program and will include many different dances and three U.S. premieres.

A 200-year birthday anniversary tribute to Fryderyk Chopin will include a choreographic work by Witold Zapała to Rondo à la Krakowiak in F major, written by the composer in1828. In stylized costumes, the piece is an homage to the Polish tradition of such folk ballets such as Pan Twardowski, Wesele w Ojcowie and Harnasie. The women are attired in Romantic period balletic costumes and the men in stylized short-length Kraków kabaty. The song Życzenie G-dur op. 74 will also be presented.

Songs from Racibórz in the Śląsk region will showcase a new set of costumes and will be accompanied by the okaryna folk instrument – a vessel flute in the shape of an egg with ten finger-holes.

Popular favorites will include Dances from Wilanów, Kaszuby, Szczawnica, Lublin, Jurgów, Szamotuły, Podegrodzie, Limanowa; Winegathering in Lubusz: Dances of the Żywiec townspeople and from the Podhale Mountains; the national dances Krakowiak, Polonez, Mazur, Kujawiak; folk songs and the customary opening Chodzony and Łowicz finale.

Mazowsze Dance Workshop and Wigilia Dinner

During the tour Mazowsze will be teaching a 5-hour Polish Folk Dance Workshop in Youngstown, OH on December 5. This "once in a lifetime" opportunity has never been done in the United States. The schedule will include: children, instrumental and lecture sessions
